Storage & Shelf Life
Store in a cool, dark place in an airtight container. Properly stored, vanilla beans can maintain their quality for up to two years. Avoid refrigeration, as it can introduce moisture and cause mold development.
Usage Instructions
Making Homemade Vanilla Extract:
- Split 4–6 whole vanilla beans lengthwise to expose the seeds.
- Place the beans in a clean, airtight jar.
- Pour 1 cup (8 ounces) of 70-proof (35% alcohol) vodka over the beans, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark place.
- Shake the jar gently once a week.
- Allow the mixture to infuse for at least 8 weeks; for a more robust flavor, steep for 6–12 months.
Using Vanilla Seeds as a Substitute for Extract:
- Split a vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape out the seeds using the back of a knife.
- Add the seeds directly to your recipe, such as batters, custards, or sauces, to impart a rich vanilla flavor.
- As a general guideline, the seeds from one vanilla bean can replace approximately one tablespoon of vanilla extract.
